Charity

In 2008/09, Scotland on Rails ran a bootcamp tutorial in advance of our Ruby conference. We paid for the venue, the speakers donated their time for free, and all the money paid for attendance went directly to charity.

Together, we’ve raised more than ten thousand pounds for the Children’s Hospice Association, which provides respite care for terminally ill children who will not live to adulthood, and support for their families.

There are two tutorials running in parallel this year, as well as a 5K run.

An introductory session run by Keavy McMinn for those newer to Ruby and/or Rails. This covers the basics of getting an application up and running, as well as going beyond the basics into adding fancier features like Ajax. ( more details )

There’s also a slightly more advanced tutorial being run by Joe O’Brien for those with a little more experience. This tutorial is geared around refactoring existing Rails applications and assumes a basic familiarity with Ruby and Rails. ( more details )

The tutorials will take place on Thursday March 25th (9-5) at the John McIntyre Conference centre at Edinburgh University’s Pollock Halls complex.

When you register, you can choose EITHER kind of ticket.

Spaces are very limited for each tutorial, so we’ve decided to control registration using EventWax this year.

Go to the EventWax page and select a ticket type. Each person can purchase a maximum of two tickets. Once you have completed this part of the process (no money changes hands) you need to go to the JustGiving page and make a minimum 75UKP donation per person. This money goes direct to CHAS, we don’t touch it, so we can’t refund it.

It’s REALLY important that you register on EventWax prior to making your donation.

OK, now that I’ve made you read it all to make sure we were all very clear on the process, the links are below. Remember, EventWax first :-)
