GUEST POST - ConfConnect - VinSol

    http://confconnect.scottishrubyconference.com/

Some basic features of the app:

    1. Browse talks through categories : Some awesome talks are lined up for this conference but with parallel tracks, its difficult to find talks in specific areas.

    2. Other events running in parallel : Starting from 5k run to code retreats to photo walks, there are a lot of events happening that will make your Edinburgh conference experience special. We have tried to organize them at a common place under other events category.

    3. Create your personalized schedule : Pick sessions that really interest you and create your personalized schedule. There is a small pick link on every event.

    4. Find who is interested in each talk : Finding people with similar interests in a conference is always a challenge. We have tried to find those people based on which sessions they have picked up for their
    personalized schedule.

    5. Comments : If you want to discuss something about a particular talk, you can post a comment.

    6. Rate talks and events : You can rate any talk after the talk starts.

    7. Popular Talks : Based on number of attendees picking each event, we will probably be able to find out some popular talks and possibly plan accordingly, if required.

We have kept authentication through twitter. So in order to create your personalized schedule, or rate a session, you need to login through twitter.

The application is still in very early stage and is rough on edges and we are constantly working on improving it.

This small initiative needs your support.

=> Please explore the app and try to pick sessions that you are probably going to attend. That will help all of us to find who is going to each session.

=> Tweet about it so that other attendees get to know about the app.

    => Please send feedback

I hope you will find the app useful.

    Regards
    Kapil Bhatia

    Exceptional - Silver Sponsors

Thanks to the the people at Contrast who are our new Silver Sponsors on behalf of their new product Exceptional. Heres what they have to say about it:

Exceptional helps you find out about and fix problems in your Ruby apps.

When new exceptions occur, you’ll be notified by e-mail, SMS or Campfire. Similar exceptions are grouped together and sorted to help you prioritise your bug-fixing. You can view backtrace and occurrence information, make notes for your team, and send exceptions to third-party ticketing services.

“Exceptional is one of the most reliable web services I’ve used. It’s incredibly easy to install and keeps me in control of unexpected behavior in my applications.” — Geoffrey Grosenbach, PeepCode

    Charity Tutorial Confirmed

We are happy to confirm that we have secured a venue for this year’s charity tutorial: Pollock Halls, our previous conference venue.

As usual, the tutorial will be the day before the conference – Thursday 25 March. This year there will be two parallel sessions: details to follow.

We will be asking for a donation to CHAS, the children’s hospice. Over the past two year’s we have raised roughly £10,000 for CHAS.

    Now Hosted on BrightBox(es)

Last week, on a train with flaky wifi, Alan posted the session list for the conference and forgot to add any caching. Our little rails app became a greasy hole in the ground and the server was so crushed, he couldn’t even ssh back on to fix it.

Alan’s been soundly beaten and the caching problem was fixed…however…

During the panic, Brightbox offered to host the site for us on a much more solid rig, which may actually have survived the cacheless frenzy, but we’ll never know.

We figured it would be silly to turn down the generous offer of a couple of load-balanced 1Gig servers in case Alan decided to pull the same stunt next year.

A big thanks to Brightbox !

    We Have a Program !

Choosing sessions this year was extraordinarily hard. We had more than 80 proposals and initially we planned on only 20 slots.

We added another track, bringing the total to three, so we were able to accept more than 30 proposals!

There were still so many proposals we couldn’t accept, but we hope those submitters will submit again next year.

This year, we’ve tried really hard to create a balanced program. Low and High level material, fresh and experienced, local and foreign presenters.

We haven’t organised a schedule yet, so we’re not sure which talks will be be on which days, or which rooms, but we thought you’d like to see the program as a work in progress.

We hope you’re as excited about this program as we are.
